Аннотация

Имя Адама Смита часто ассоциируется с идеей о том, что индивидуум, желая улучшить свое положение, приносит пользу себе, а также, непреднамеренно, и обществу. В данной статье рассматривается вопрос о том, допускал ли Смит возможность того, что желание индивидуума улучшить свое положение не приносит ни ему, ни обществу пользы.
В трудах Смита содержится следующий ответ на этот вопрос. Значительное богатство может создать превратные стимулы, ведущие к разрушению взаимозависимости пользы, получаемой индивидуумом и обществом. Этот вывод получен на основе анализа роли, которую играет одобрение. В процветающем обществе присутствуют мощные стимулы к тому, чтобы добиваться одобрения с помощью богатства, а не благодаря добродетельному поведению.
