Japan was the first Asian country to commence industrial development following Western Europe and the United States. In addition, Japan managed to implement the industrial system in a short period and reached significant results by the beginning of the 1890s. Therefore, it can be argued that the reformation of Japan in the first half of the Meiji period (1870-1880s) is one of the distinct historical examples of a technological modernization and transition to a new economic model. This article analyses the interconnection of factors, which enabled the country to overcome one of the most profound crisis of its history. A key aspect of the successful transfer of the country from agricultural economic structure to industrial system was due to Meiji government's approach. During these years the Meiji government created the necessary conditions that then assisted in accelerating the industrial development that followed. Essentially, the approach that the Meiji Japanese government took to modernizing the economy can be characterized as pragmatic. This approach was the foundation for the selection of suitable foreign concepts that were adapted by taking into consideration the Japanese cultural and historical circumstances. This article opens with an analysis of the cultural and economic heritage of the Tokugawa period (1603-1868), which formed a special ethical environment and socio-economic conditions of the country’s modernisation during the Meiji period (1868–1912). Further discussed the features of the Japanese industrial system formation in the 70-80s of the XIX century and the problem of transition from strict state regulation to the expansion of private initiative. The final chapter raises the question of the Asian market impact on the process of industrialisation in Japan.
