State Corporation Participation in Mergers and Acquisitions
Abstract
The article is dedicated to the analysis of state corporations activity at M&A market and considers its size and structure by industries. The author presumes that the Russian M&A market is in most defined by the state companies, having significantly high share in extra large transactions (over 1 bln dollars). The state corporations are expanding through M&A transactions only in those industries where they have strong position after the mass privatization of 1992–1994 (oil and gas industry, power industry and finance). They do not show any activity in the industries formed during the market economy period. Neither SOEs nor private corporations use the instrument of M&A for business expansion in industries needing consolidation for creating competitive advantages.
