Economics as a Rhetoric Art
Abstract
The object of the article is to outline context, ideological background and possible consequences of regarding economics as a rhetoric or as the art of persuasion. Such approach suggests that the text itself takes on special significance and implies study of economics not only in the view of logic and facts but metaphors, images, common places and plausible stories. The article shows that the fact of introducing rhetorical problem is symptomatic and closely related to the economies' inner development and latest tendencies in humanities. In this regard such questions as distinguishing between art and science, truth criterion of theories gain special importance. The particular attention was paid to the examination of rhetorical strategies and tropes' usage in the works of M. Friedman, M. Blaug, R.Coase, R.Fogel, H.Becker, etc. The last part of the article sets perspectives for the future development of economics in the context of rhetoric.
