Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • JEL classification codes
    Articles in economics journals are usually classified according to the JEL classification codes, a system originated by the Journal of Economic Literature. The JEL is published quarterly by the American Economic Association (AEA) and contains survey articles and information on recently published books and dissertations.
  • Abstract (In Russian) - the recommended length for the abstract is 200–250 words.
  • Keywords (Russian).
  • Abstract (in English) - the recommended length for the abstract is 200–250 words.
  • Keywords (English).
  • Author’s full name, academic degree, position (title), place of employment, institutional mailing address, personal email on Russian.
  • The manuscript should be of normal journal article length (say, between 7,000 and 10,000 words).

Author Guidelines

 INFORMATION FOR AUTHORS

I. Submitted manuscripts should comply with the following requirements and conditions:

  1. All publications in the journal are free of charge. The article is submitted on the submission page. The submitted manuscript should be written in Russian or in English. If the article is written in Russian, the abstract and keywords should be given both in Russian and in English. The title page should contain the JEL number, the full name of the author(s) and the title of the article. The maximum number of authors of an article is 3 people (in exceptional cases, the Editorial Board considers articles with a large number of authors; The Editorial Board may require clarification regarding the contribution of authors to the material).
  2. The manuscript should be of normal journal article length (say, between 7,000 and 10,000 words) and should be accompanied by abstract (200–230 words) and key words (10 words or phrases). The abstract should explain the logic and structure of the article, the problems studied in it, and also contain in a concentrated form the following information: a) subject and aim (objectives), hypothesis; b) method (methodology); c) results (conclusions) and their theoretical or/and practical significance; d) sphere of application of results obtained.
  3. Information about the author(s) (in English and in Russian) at the end of the article should include: full name, scientific qualification (post-graduate, PhD, Doctor of Science, etc., scientific degree and title, number of publications, grants received);current job/employment; scientific interests; contact details (telephone numbers, e-mail address). The author should also state his (her) h-index (Scopus or WoS), ORCID, Researcher ID and SPIN codes. The editors send the depersonalized version to the reviewers.

To indicate that you have complied with our ethics in publishing, please include the following statement: “The article (title, author(s)) is original, has never published before and has never been submitted to any other journal(s) or publisher(s). The author has checked the manuscript for improper or inaccurate citation (plagiarism). The author consents to publication of the paper in the journal (including electronically)”.

When preparing the manuscript for submission the author may find it useful to consult articles published earlier.

The manuscript should be submitted as a separate Word or RTF file uploaded on the submission page. If sent by e-mail the authors are strongly recommended to use the ZIP format.

 II.Requirements to the content and structure of the manuscript

   1.The submitted manuscript should be original and have never been published in any other journal(s) or book(s). The article should:

  1. have the characteristics that distinguish the scientific nature of the publication: the proper level of abstraction of the style, the description of the hypothesis, the tools that are used, confirming qualitative and quantitative data, etc.;
  2. create essentially new knowledge as compared to the available scientific literature on the subject (except for textbooks or reference materials);
  3. clearly demonstrate its author’s acquaintance with the views of leading Russian and foreign scientists on this topic, including the position of the authors who previously published research results in economic journals issued by St Petersburg State University.

    Preference is given to the articles of (a) scientific and (b) analytical character.

   2. The article can be submitted in Russian or English. If the material is submitted in English, the Editorial Board may request a Russian version of the article to speed up the review process, as well as to make sure that the article has not been published earlier in Russian journals.

   3. The editors do not simultaneously consider pools of articles from one author or an author who is a member of the team of authors. Publication by one author is possible no more than once a year.

   4. The material proposed for publication should be within the scope of the journal's subject field, i.e. contain the results of a study on evaluation and / or comparative analysis of global and  regional trends and developments of a scientific and methodological nature in the following areas:

  • Macro- and microeconomic research
  • Mathematical and instrumental methods of economics
  • International economics and finance
  • Russia and the economy of emerging markets
  • Regional economics
  • Business and network economics
  • Sustainable development and green economy
  • Innovation and digital economy
  • Public finance, insurance, and banking
  • Corporate finance, investments, and accounting
  • The history of economic thought and economic history
  1. The authors should use the following formal structure of the paper:
  • Introduction
  • Stating the problem, identifying its importance in the contemporary Russian and international economic theory and practice.
  • Main part of the article
  • Original research including the review of existing publications on this subject, historical overview, evolution of the scientific approaches within the field, substantiation of the research instruments, primary empirical data, qualitative and (or) quantitative modeling, secondary data processing, etc.. It is recommended to use clear structure and divide the main body into sections with headings and subheadings or use numbered sections.
  • Conclusions:
  • Discussion and implications, presentation of results and findings corresponding to the goals and aims set forth in the introduction, sphere of application, limitations or directions for future research.
  • Acknowledgments (if applicable)
  • References should be presented in the form of bibliographical entries in alphabetical order, unnumbered. They should include only those publications that are referred to in the article. References should demonstrate author’s awareness of current research and include current publications both in Russia and abroad. The list of references should consist of no less than 15 sources and no more than 50. Self-citing should not be more than 10%.
  • Descriptions of non-author materials (anonymous Internet publications, regulatory documents, statistical compilations, etc.) are placed in footnotes (numbering is continuous).
  • References to items from the list of references in the text of the article are enclosed in round brackets: (Ivanov, 2019). If a specific citation, formula, theorem, table, figure, etc. is given, it is necessary to indicate the page number: (Smith, 2020, p. 47).When mentioning several works by the same author published in the same year, the letter of the alphabet is given next to the year of publication in the list of references and in the reference in the text:(Smith, 2020a), (Smith, 2020b).
  • If the source has less than three or three authors, then the surnames of all authors are indicated in round brackets in the text of the article: (Ivanov, Petrov and Sidorov, 1995, p. 23). If the source has more than three authors, then indicate in round brackets as follows:(Ivanov et.al., 2019, p. 23).

All Russian names of sources should be first transliterated using Latin letters and then followed by the translation in English in square brackets.

      1. Authors who wish to include mathematics shall do so only when it does not compromise realistic analysis. In such cases, the main steps in the development of argument, findings and conclusions should be made intelligible to a non-mathematical reader. The mathematical part of the argument should be enclosed as appendix.
      2. Page layout: (a) the printing fields 25 mm; (b) font size 12; (c) page numbers provided; (d) correct shape and positioning of pictures, tables and formulas; (e) no colored pictures are allowed; (f) all the explanations and comments should be made in footnotes on each page. 

III. Reviewing procedure

      1. All manuscripts (scientific articles, bibliographic and dissertation reviews, etc.) submitted for publication in the Journal are subject to a three-stage quality control procedure: (a) formal review; (b) preliminary review; (c) substantial review (anonymous).

More detailed information about reviewing procedure is provided in the Provisions for reviewing manuscripts submitted for publishing in the St Petersburg University Journal of Economic Studies.

      1. All remarks made by the reviewer are forwarded to the author for consideration. The author shall respond to these comments point by point and present both the reviewed version of the article and a list of responses.
      2. The decision for acceptance (stating the date of issue)/rejection/return for the revision is taken by the chief editor following discussion of the current edition of the journal at the editorial board meeting and communicated to the author no later than 60 days after receipt of the manuscript.
