Economic Department of St. Petersburg State University in the Competitive Environment

Abstract

The article is devoted to the analysis of Economic department of St. Petersburg State University in comparison with a number of higher education institutes and universities of economic profi le in Russia. For comparative procedures, we use open sources such as a database of Russian index of scientifi c citing as well as the information on universities staff , which is available on their sites. In this article, the characteristics about key scientometric indicators used for comparison are given. In addition, a number of main shortcomings and assumptions which need to be taken into account with calculation of scientometric indicators are listed. The author raised the questions of comparability of scientometric data in various areas of science and made an attempt to unite quantitative and qualitative indicators in the model acceptable for comparison. Questions of increase of scientometric indicators are considered because they infl uence positions in the international
ratings (Academic ranking of world universities, QS World University Rankings и Times Higher Education World University Rankings). At the end of article, the author provided information about the publishing activity of university staff in Russian publishing companies with the wide reading audience. Some conclusions on the results of this comparison are made.
